Lake County Police Release Additional Information on Fatal Crash

In Lake County, police have released additional information on a fatal crash in Hobart Tuesday night.  The Lake County Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Team was dispatched to assist Hobart Police at 61st and Colorado Street.  The Lake County Sheriff’s Department says upon arrival officers were told that a green Toyota RAV4 was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed eastbound on 61st Avenue, from near 61st and Broadway in Merrillville and continuing into Hobart.  Authorities report the RAV4, driven by a 62-year-old Merrillville woman, struck a vehicle at 61st and Marcella in Hobart, then continued east, crashing into an SUV at a high rate of speed, killing the driver, identified as 53-year-old Kathern Stafford of Lake Station.  The Lake County Coroner’s office says Stafford was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma shortly after 8 pm.  Police say the suspect vehicle continued and struck another vehicle before coming to a stop.  The driver of the suspect vehicle was transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary with serious injuries.  Police continue to investigate.
