In Jasper County, all southbound lanes of I-65 were reopened to traffic just after 12pm today following a tractor-trailer fire near State Road 10 earlier this morning that shut down all lanes for hazardous material cleanup. Indiana State Police Lowell Post reports they were advised of the incident at 2am.
An investigation revealed a tractor and dual trailer sustained a brake fire to the rear trailer. The driver pulled over and, after an unsuccessful attempt to extinguish the fire, unhitched the trailer from the front trailer and pulled forward, and the trailer then caught fire.
State Police report the trailer was loaded with Hazmat consisting of 55 gallon barrels of sodium hydroxide and phosphonium chloride. Northbound lanes of I-65 reopened around 7:30am.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution as traffic backups may continue in that area for some time.
