The Valparaiso Police Department has announced services for Sgt. Steve Kobitz, who passed away this week of cardiac complications while on duty. Viewing is scheduled for noon to 6 pm this Friday May 29, within the Great Room of the Porter County Expo center. Those wishing to pay their respects are asked to be mindful of social distancing recommendations and utilize proper personal protection equipment while in attendance. Social gathering restrictions currently allow for 100 people to attend, and this capacity will be monitored to ensure the safety of all those paying their respects.
The funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday May 30 within the Great Room of the Porter County Expo Center. Due to the limitations placed on social gatherings, currently at 100 attendees, only those permitted by family and members of the Valparaiso Police Department will be allowed within the Great Room during the ceremony. Every attempt is being made to disseminate the audio of the services to the exterior of the buildings for those who would like to attend.
A procession will follow the services, leaving the Expo Center north on State Road 49, then traveling west on Vale Park Road, south on Calumet Avenue, west on Glendale Boulevard, south on Campbell Street, east on Lincolnway, and south on Washington Street. The procession will pause briefly in front of the Valparaiso Police Department, then continue toward U.S 30, and east onto Graceland Cemetery. “Thank you to everyone who has aided the Kobitz family and the Valparaiso Police Department during this difficult time,” the department said. “Your services, thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes have been greatly appreciated.”
