In Gary, Mayor Jerome Prince has called for a loud and joyful send-off for two Calumet Region Senior Little League Teams heading to state championship tournaments this week. Mayor Prince said this is likely the first time the city has sent a girls softball team and Little League baseball team to state finals at the same time. The send-off begins in the parking lot of U.S. Steel Yard, home of the Gary SouthShore RailCats 3:45 this afternoon (Wednesday July 21), heading west on 4th Avenue, south on Broadway past Gary City Hall, to Interstate 80/94. The baseball team will leave immediately afterwards as they’re scheduled to play tomorrow; the girls softball team will be in the procession but they’ll be leaving later this week.
“This is historic, and it’s exciting to have teams of young men and young women representing Gary and Northwest Indiana,” Mayor Prince said. “We want to send them off with a police, fire and general services escort making lots of noise and getting fans excited.” The Calumet Region Senior Little League All-Stars baseball team will play in Greenwood, while the Calumet Region Senior Little League All-Stars girls softball team will play in Middlebury.
Carloads of family members and fans will join the procession, and Gary residents are encouraged to safety cheer on the teams during the send-off along the route, said Mayor Prince.“These young people are making history for Gary and Northwest Indiana, and we’re demonstrating our love and appreciation for the players, their coaches, the league and the families when we support them,” Mayor Prince said.
