A Porter County opposition group is holding an organizational and informative meeting this evening in regards to a proposal to build and operate a rail line that would extend generally from LaPorte through Illinois to Wisconsin, and connect with existing Class One railroads.  RAILED, Residents Against the Invasion of Land by Eminent Domain, reports the meeting will take place at Morgan Township School, at 6:30pm.

The Great Lakes Basin Rail Line, which is seeking authority to build and run the 278-mile line, says the project is intended to relieve Chicago-area shipping congestion by creating a bypass for through traffic not destined for or originating in the Chicago area.

The Surface Transportation Board’s Office of Environmental Analysis is hosting public scoping meetings in the three states this month – including locally in Lowell, Wanatah, LaPorte and Valparaiso next week, as well as an online meeting on Wednesday, April 27th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Central Time).  To register to attend this online public scoping meeting, please click here.

RAILED reports the addition of the meeting in Valparaiso is due to the help of Republican State Representative Ed Soliday of Valparasio and First Distrist Democratic Congressman Pete Visclosky.
