In Highland, beginning today (Thursday, May 28), NIPSCO says it will be performing work near Kennedy Avenue and Norman Street to modernize an existing 30-inch underground natural gas pipeline to allow for inspection equipment to be run through the system in the future. The work is expected to last seven days, weather permitting, and will be performed during normal business hours. Officials say residents and businesses within one mile of the job site may experience a natural gas odor in the air and some audible noise. The company says this work is part of a multi-year natural gas system upgrade project that runs from NIPSCO’s existing Highland Junction to its existing Grant Street natural gas regulator station – which began in 2017 and is expected to be complete in December 2020. NIPSCO encourages anyone who may detect natural gas odors, regardless of whether or not they think it’s related to this project, to call 1-800-4-NIPSCO and a service technician will be sent to ensure the safety of the area.
