Multiple municipalities held a ribbon-cutting/groundbreaking ceremony Friday June 4th to mark progress on the completion of the Marquette Greenway Trail. The Town of Burns Harbor was awarded a Next Level Trails grant in 2019, which was used to complete a nearly one-mile stretch of the Marquette Greenway Trail. The journey continues in Portage, as the city received a ceremonial check at the event; that grant money will be used to construct a segment of trail from Deer Trail Park to the Burns Harbor town limit. When completed, the Marquette Greenway Trail will stretch from the Indiana Dunes National Park’s West Beach all the way to the east unit of the National Park. The Indiana DNR says the Burns Harbor project helps close a gap in the Marquette Greenway system, a planned 50-mile multi-state trail that would connect Chicago to New Buffalo, Michigan along the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
