Leaders from the Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Foundation in Valparaiso and Merrillville-based Legacy Foundation gathered Thursday, May 31 for a check presentation.
The Legacy Foundation presented the MAAC with a $25,000 grant to support the facility’s efforts in providing combined training for police, fire, EMS, and hazmat teams. Legacy Foundation is a community foundation and philanthropic partner serving Lake County, managing more than 300 donor funds. Legacy Foundation is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization operating under the leadership of a volunteer board of directors.
During Thursday’s gathering, vehicle extrication training was led by Commander Kevin DeYoung and the current academy class recruits, made up of the following departments:
• East Chicago Fire Department (14 recruits)
• Lakes of Four Seasons Fire Department (2 recruits)
• Portage Fire Department (2 recruits)
• South Haven Fire Department (1 recruit)
The MAAC campus provides an opportunity for law enforcement, firefighters and EMS personnel, who often respond to calls together, to train together, at a one-of-a-kind facility that just had its official grand opening last fall.
