A country music legend has passed away. Merle Haggard — one of country’s most successful singers — died on his birthday Wednesday from complications of pneumonia. He was 79 years old.
Westwood One Correspondent Mary Moloney reports country music’s biggest stars are mourning the loss of Merle Haggard. Brad Paisley posted on Twitter that there are no words to describe the loss and sorrow felt within all of music. Dierks Bentley tweeted “literally just fell to the floor, can’t believe we lost the hag.” Jake Owen tweeted “no wonder it’s raining today, even God is crying.”
Peter Cooper, with the Country Music Hall of Fame, says while Haggard was known as one of Country’s outlaws, he was much deeper than that. Cooper says Haggard took his music seriously, that’s why he kept a tour schedule that would wear out most musicians in their 20’s. Haggard was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
