Committee Okays Illinois Referendum on Recreational Marijuana

Residents of Illinois may be asked if they support legalizing recreational marijuana when they head to the polls this November. An Illinois Senate committee recently advanced legislation creating a voter referendum on whether marijuana should be taxed, regulated and allowed for use by those 21 and over. Illinois Senator Bill Cunningham of Chicago says he believes it’s appropriate to bring the public in on the debate and give them an opportunity to register their opinion.  Supporters say the referendum would be non-binding but still serve to further the case for legalizing recreational marijuana in Illinois.
