In Portage, Porter County Master Gardeners Association co-chair of philanthropy Marty Seroczynski this week presented a $300 grant to Bonner Senior Center director Robin Wilkening and nutrition coordinator Erin Moore for use in the center’s Bruce Creasy Community Garden. The funds will be used to add three more raised beds at the garden, bringing the total number of beds to 18; add panels to elevate some crops, and to provide members with pots, soil and seeds to begin seedlings to be planted in the garden. “We wanted to include seniors, who have been isolated for much of the past year, in starting the seedlings for the garden,” said Wilkening, adding members will receive the materials as they pick up their meals or along meal delivery routes. Produce from the community garden is donated to the Portage Township Food Pantry. The Master Gardeners presented 14 grants and one scholarship this year.
