In the town of Porter, the Porter County Search and Rescue Team, Porter Fire, and Indiana Dunes National Park Law Enforcement Rangers conducted a search and rescue exercise near the Dunes Learning Center. The interagency exercise this past Sunday April 6, 2025 provided practice searching for missing visitors in the National Park with a special emphasis on searching for individuals with autism. Twenty responders participated. April is National Autism Acceptance Month. The Porter County Search and Rescue Team serves all of northwest Indiana through its membership in the Indiana Department of Homeland Security District One Response Task Force and is dispatched by the Porter County 911 Center at the request of police and fire departments across the region.
