In Valparaiso, Valpo Parks say a donation from the Smith family in honor of Byron Smith III, who passed away in January 2024, will go toward renovating the diamond ballfields at Fairgrounds Park. The parks department says in recognition of his dedication and passion for the game, a ceremony will be held in the spring to officially rename the complex, the Byron Smith III Sports Complex at Fairgrounds Park. Valpo Parks says Smith was a dedicated umpire for the parks department for over forty years and more than 10,000 games, spending countless hours on the ball fields at the park. A news release said the renovation project will include improvements to the playing surface, fencing, dugouts, lights, and more.“We are incredibly grateful to the Smith family for their generous donation,” said Kevin Nuppnau, Director of Valpo Parks. “Byron was a beloved member of our community, and this gift will ensure his legacy lives on for generations to come.” A dedication ceremony will be held to officially rename the complex on May 8, 2025, at 5pm CST, at the north entrance to the ballfields.
