Goose Lake Music Festival (1970) Print E-mail

081010gooselakeposterThe influential line-up included Jethro Tull, Chicago, the Small Faces featuring Rod Stewart, Mountain, James Gang and the Flying Burrito Brothers, plus Ten Years After and John Sebastian, fresh from their Woodstock appearances the previous summer. Michigan's best acts, like Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder & Detroit, Teegarden & VanWinkle, Frost, the MC5, Brownsville Station, the Stooges, SRC and Savage Grace were also featured.

Festival-goers had a weekend of highlights and variety. Friday's program included the classical baroque rock of the New York Rock 'n' Roll Ensemble,

Sebastian's "Darling, Be Home Soon," and Ten Years After performing "Sweet Little Sixteen." Saturday saw the original Stooges performing "1970" during their last time on stage together, while Mountain jammed on "Mississippi Queen," a hit from a few months before. Sunday's stage featured a batch of Michigan bands, including Savage Grace performing a killer version of "All Along the Watchtower." Jethro Tull closed the show.

Tickets were a 1.5" dia. plastic token designed to look like poker chips with gold foil lettering and goose logo. There are 9 known color variations for the admission tokens. Approximately 70,000 tickets were sold but as many as 200,000 people were thought to have attended.

The festival was strongly opposed by local residents, who failed to prevent its occurrence despite attempts at litigation. Approximately 70,000 advance tickets were sold, but contemporary press estimates said that as many as 200,000 people attended. The festival was characterized by the widespread use and exchange of hard drugs. Local authorities chose not to intervene in the open drug use for fear of rioting.

Festival attendees were forbidden from leaving once they entered. The festival grounds were surrounded by a razor-wire fence and were patrolled by helicopter.

Come Sail Away with Keith! Print E-mail
Valparaiso resident Keith Friedlund has returned home from an 8 week journey,  sailing back in time on board an exact replica of Columbus' famed ship, the Nina. Two weeks after retiring from U.S. Steel, Friedlund learned that he would be setting sail with the ships, starting in Brunswick, Ga., logging more than 1,700 miles aboard both the Pinta and the Nina, hitting South Carolina and Philadelphia before finally ending in Rochester, N.Y. The Nina, and the sister ship the Pinta will be docked at the Hammond Marina, 701 Casino Drive, until their departure early Monday morning July 5th. While in port, you are invited to visit the ships for walk-aboard self-guided tours. Teachers or groups wishing to schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member should call the ship directly at (787) 672-2152

Tommy Shaw Girls with Guns Print E-mail

041610gunsOn today's Classic Rock Class Reunion at 1pm we featured Tommy Shaw's solo song “Girls with Guns” from his '84 album of the same name. Wasn't it rumored that this was Chicago newswoman Joan Esposito's arm on the album cover? Then again, how many bogus Joan Esposito rumors have circulated around Chicago over the years? Maybe it's Jackie Bange's arm.
