SoJourner Truth House represents hope and help for homeless and at-risk women and their children in the Gary community. Named after an escaped/freed slave who became an abolitionist, preacher, speaker, singer and champion of women's rights, SoJourner Truth even helped president Abraham Lincoln recruit black troops for the Union Army during the war between the states. The facility also operates a food pantry that serves around 1,500 persons each month.
