An investigation continues after a 28 year old Hammond man was airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend after a 3 vehicle crash on State Road 49 at the Kankakee River Bridge, north of Wheatfield. The Jasper County Sheriff's Office reports James Porter was heading north and failed to stop for traffic, that was backed up approximately one-quarter mile from the traffic light on the Kankakee River Bridge, resulting in Porter's vehicle striking a vehicle, which in-turn impacted another vehicle. Authorities report only Porter was injured, while the drivers of the two other vehicles struck refused treatment at the scene. The Sheriff's Office says additional information from the scene investigation revealed the Porter may have been using a cell phone prior to impact.
