A Valparaiso man has been named “Outstanding Tree Steward for Indiana” by the Indiana Urban Forest Council. Jim Beversdorf was recently presented with the award in Indianapolis during the Council's annual conference. Over the last three years, Beversdorf, a former timber farmer from Wisconsin, has volunteered his expertise to the city of Valparaiso, serving on the city's Tree Advisory Committee and initiating the city's Neighbors Against Bad Bugs tree tagging efforts to raise awareness of the emerald ash borer. Mayor Jon Costas says, “we’re grateful to Jim for his time and talent in caring for our city’s urban forest. We thank him for his contribution to our community and congratulate him on this well deserved state recognition.” Beversdorf recently planted 65 oak trees around the perimeter of Valparaiso's Immanuel Lutheran Church, which will benefit the community for decades to come.
