Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge will be the keynote speaker at the Porter County Sheriffs Department's annual Inspection and Memorial Service next Friday in Valparaiso. Both the inspection and service are open to the public. The annual tradition during National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Week honors the men and women whose lives have been lost. Ridge, who has since re-entered the private sector, served as the 43rd Governor of Pennsylvania from 1995 through 2001, and resigned the governorship after President George W. Bush announced that Governor Ridge would become the director of a new U.S. Office of Homeland Security following the terrorist attacks in September 2001. Ridge served as US Homeland Security Advisor, then later became the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, serving in that position from 2003 to 2005 . He was also a longtime member of the US House of Representatives from Pennsylvania, from 1983 to 1995.
