Several local environmental groups released a statement in advance of an Indiana Department of Environmental Management meeting in LaPorte this afternoon (Tue Dec 18 2012) on Enbridge Energy's proposed Line 6B pipeline, which originates in Griffith. The groups say they “urge IDEM to ensure that Enbridge implements every possible precaution to protect the people and natural resources of Northwest Indiana and Lake Michigan.” The statement, signed by Save the Dunes, National Wildlife Federation, Hoosier Environmental Council, Indiana Wildlife Federation, Porter County Chapter of Izaak Walton League; Dunelands Group/Hoosier Chapter Sierra Club; Freshwater Future, Great Lakes Environmental Law Center, and Alliance for the Great Lakes. jointly expresses concern about the potential impact on water quality, vital habitat, and public health in Northwest Indiana. Today's meeting is 1-4 pm at the LaPorte County Lbrary.

Here is the IDEM news release:
News Release (Indiana Department of Environmental Management): IDEM invites citizens to a public hearing about two Section 401 Water Quality Certifications for Enbridge Energy to place fill materials into waters of the State of Indiana. The hearing will run from 1 to 4 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, in the LaPorte County Library, 904 Indiana Avenue in LaPorte.

Enbridge Energy owns and operates a 30-inch diameter crude oil and liquid petroleum pipeline and plans to replace it with a 36-inch diameter pipe. The new pipe will run parallel to the old pipe through Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and St. Joseph counties.
