Sheriffs police in La Porte County say a jail inmate has suffered an early-term miscarriage. Authorities say the 23-year-old woman became involved in a physical altercation with another inmate and a jail deputy intervened. She was uninjured but was transported to an area hospital, officials say, because she was pregnant, and during the exam it was determined the unborn child was deceased. The inmate has since been released from the hospital as well as jail custody, police say, and the La Porte County Sheriffs Office, Coroners office and Indiana State Jail Inspectors office are investigating. The jail deputy did not report any injuries. Police say the woman had been processed into the jail November 14 charged with probation violation.
