Afternoon rush hour for the South Shore Line is being affected by a disabled train in East Chicago at last check. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, or NICTD, reports that eastbound train 209 is disabled with a damaged pantograph, and as a result, westbound train 218, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 5:34 this afternoon, is canceled between Gary and Chicago. NICTD says the incident has also canceled eastbound train 117, scheduled to depart from Chicago at 5:58pm. NICTD says maintenance personnel are en route to assess the damage to determine when service can be resumed, but meanwhile, South Shore Trains cannot operate east of Hammond.
