Fatal Accident on Toll Road

Indiana State Police at the Toll Road say a 20-year-old LaPorte man was pronounced dead at a South Bend hospital early this morning after his vehicle went off an overpass about a mile west of the Michigan City exit last night.  Troopers say around 10 pm the victim, identified as Ryan Joseph Smith, for unknown reasons drove off the Holmsville Road overpass, went airborne, struck a semi on the eastbound side, then was ejected from his vehicle. His vehicle continued into the westbound lanes where it struck a second semi.  No injuries reported to either of the semi drivers, and no load lost, but the trailer on the first semi broke in the center from the impact.  All lanes east and west bound were closed for approximately four and half hours while attending to injured, helicopter landing for transport to hospital, crash investigation, and vehicles removal and clearing of the accident scene.
