High School Approves Move to Northwest Indiana

A high school just over the state line has approved a move to northwest Indiana. The vote by nearly 25-hundred members of the Illiana Christian Association this week was seventy-percent in favor of relocating Illiana Christian High School from Lansing to a 37-acre site yet to be purchased about twelve miles south at the southwest corner of 109th and Calumet in south Lake County, near St. John, an area known locally as “Shoe Corner” in unincorporated Hanover Township. The school says they're now undertaking a major fundraising campaign to make it happen.  The school says students are coming to the private institution from a “wider geographic area than ever before, particularly from the communities in northwest Indiana.”
The school began instruction in 1945, initially meeting at Lansing Christian School and First Christian Reformed Church of Lansing then moving temporarily into barracks in the Sweet Woods forest Preserve before ultimately finding a home in a new building on a nine-acre campus on Indiana Avenue in the Oak Glen neighborhood of Lansing.  At one time, school officials say the Lansing campus was roughly in the center of where students were coming from, which included South Holland and Lansing in Illinois and Munster and Highland in Indiana. In recent years, they say families have significantly expanded Illiana's reach to include a much broader region that now includes the Tri-Town area of Lake County – Dyer, St. John, Schererville, as well as Crete, Illinois. They believe the new school could possibly open in two to four years.
