Coroners Report Shows Heroin Problem 'Escalating'

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris says his end of year report for 2013 shows the county's heroin problem "has continued to escalate at an alarming rate."  Other data from the coroner's report show the number of suicides decreased from 36 in 2012 to 24 last year, and there was one homicide in Porter County in 2013. Five homicides were reported in both 2012 and 2011.  The Porter County Coroner’s Office was notified of 383 deaths in 2013, 364 deaths in 2012. Of the 383 deaths reported to the Coroner’s Office, 63 required autopsies, and 13 of the 63 autopsies were performed by a forensic pathologist. According to Vital Records division of the Porter County Health Department there were a total of 1,487 deaths in Porter County.  There were 11 motor vehicle fatalities in 2013 compared to. 9 in 2012.  Harris says 2013 resulted in 16 heroin related deaths versus 9 in 2012, a 77.7% increase.   Harris says the total number of drug-related deaths in 2013 was 33, a figure that includes16 heroin-related deaths.  He says there were 34 drug-related deaths in 2012.
