The weather this winter has been a significant factor for the pothole problem afflicting northwest Indiana, but overweight semi's are also a contributing factor. Indiana State Police Lowell Post reports, just before 10am this morning, a trooper pulled over a semi pulling a loaded flatbed with two steel coils on eastbound US 20, near Old Hobart Road in Portage. Authorities report the semi was weighed using portable scales and was found to be 53-thousand pounds overweight.
State Police report another semi pulling a loaded flatbed with steel coils was stooped on Friday and was found to 49-thousand pounds overweight. Both semi drivers were cited for being overweight and log book violations, resulting in both vehicles being impounded. Authorities report both semis operate for the same company, located in Michigan.
