Numerous Catalytic Converters Stolen in Valpo

In Valparaiso, police are asking for the public's help as they investigate the thefts of twelve catalytic converters removed from vehicles in the early morning hours of February 27th. The thefts occurred to vehicles parked in parking lots of larger apartment complexes on the north and south sides of Valparaiso. The estimated loss in each case is approximately $450.
Police say more than one person is believed to be involved, and investigators say the individuals are believed to be parking their vehicle near the vehicle they are removing the catalytic converter from and giving the appearance they are attempting to repair their own vehicle when they are actually stealing a converter from another one. Police say a power tool is being used to cut the catalytic converter from the vehicles.
Anyone who observes or hear suspicious activity near a parked vehicle, especially one in an apartment complex, is asked to immediately contact police. Individuals can also text a crime tip through TIP411 (847-411) -- police say remember to enter “Valpo” as your keyword first in the message field before sending the text.
Portage Police are also investigating the recent thefts of about a dozen catalytic converters from cars parked at apartment complexes since the middle of this month (February).  Valparaiso Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Michael Grennes says detectives are talking with Portage investigators to see if the incidents are related.
