Motorists are being asked to avoid I-94, both east and westbound, from Michigan City to the Indiana/Michigan State line, as the lake effect snow band in that area has caused a massive pile up of cars and semis, with one confirmed death. LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan says there are vehicles under semis, vehicles smashed into other vehicles, and vehicles off bridges.
Sullivan says there more presumed dead, but authorities have not been able confirm those because they cannot get to them at this time. Meanwhile, Sullivan says numerous fire departments, eight-to-ten ambulances from two counties and from Michigan have been called down and they are trying to get medical helicopters in if they can fly in this lake effect snow band. He says LaPorte County E-M-S has put out an all-call for all employees to report for work and the LaPorte and Berrien County Coroner's Offices vehicles and manpower have been sent to the scene as well.
Indiana State Police reports stay away from this area, as white-out conditions, with heavy to moderate snowfall and reduced visibility is being reported. All eastbound traffic is being diverted off onto State Road 49, Chesterton exit in Porter County.
