Police say a gunman shot and killed two women at a Martin's Supermarket on East Bristol Street in Elkhart Wednesday night. Elkhart police officers shot and killed the man when he pointed his gun at them. Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Smith says Elkhart police officers were on the scene quickly and stopped the gunman. "Immediately went to the area where they heard the gunshot and that's when they saw a subject there that pointed a gun at them. They fired on the subject," Sgt. Smith said. "We believe they hit the subject. The subject is deceased." Police say the man was pointing his gun at a third person when officers arrived. "We found a handgun at the store, in the store and we also found a large knife. Both of those recovered near the suspect," said Sgt. Smith.
Smith says the quick response from Elkhart police saved lives. "They acted with bravery. They knew when they went into that store and heard that gunshot that they went directly to the area where they heard that last gunshot and that was obviously an effort to stop what he was doing, which was killing people in the store." Smith says it's not clear if the gunman knew either of his victims. "The area where the shootings happened in the store are basically from one end of the store to the next. There were several rounds fired in there, both from police and from the suspect." Police say the gumnan had a large caliber semi-automatic handgun.
