In Valparaiso, police announced today that almost 16-hundred pounds of prescription drugs were collected and destroyed in 2013. Valparaiso Police Sgt. Michael Grennes says it is important for residents to properly dispose of unwanted or old prescription drugs as prescription drug abuse among high school students has increased in recent years and has become a big problem in the community.
Sgt. Greenes says never flush your medication down the toilet as it will get into the water supply. Valparaiso Police initiated a Prescription Drug Drop Off Program in 2010, and since then an estimated five-thousand pounds of prescription drugs have been collected and destroyed. If you would like to dispose of your old or unwanted prescription drugs, you can do so 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the lobby of the Valparaiso Police Department.
