Senate Says Yes to Cursive Writing Bill

The full Indiana Senate has signed off on legislation requiring cursive writing be taught in Hoosier elementary schools. Senate Bill 120 passed by a 36-to-13 vote. Cursive writing became an option in 2011. In Lake County, Indiana State Police Lowell Post say a semi driver who hit the interstate sign for the Crown Point exit on I-65 Tuesday afternoon reported he blacked out. US-41 Purple Heart Corridor Extends Southward

On Monday, Cedar Lake has joined other Lake county communities in designating a portion of US-41 as a Purple Heart Corridor. Isom Found Guilty of Murder by Jury

The trial of a 47 year old Gary man is almost over as the Times reports the jury found Kevin Isom guilty on three-counts of murder in the deaths of his wife and two step children, and guilty of criminal recklessness, after two-hours of deliberation. The Times reports sentencing begins tomorrow morning, and Isom faces either the death penalty, life without the possibility of parole, or a sentence of a specific number of years.

Crashes on I-65 US 20 Causing Delays

Two separate crashes in the region have caused some lane closures. The right lane of northbound I-65 is closed near U-S 231 due to a crash, causing stop and go traffic and up to 20 minute delays, as you travel northbound on I-65 near mile 246. Meanwhile, tipsters are reporting a bad crash on US-20, just west of Michigan City, that has both directions shut down. No further information is available at this time.

The trial of a 47 year old Gary man charged with three-counts of murder in the deaths of his wife and two step children is now in the hands jurors, after closing arguments were made today. The Times reports Kevin Isom is also accused of three-counts of attempted murder for allegedly shooting at officers responding to the incident. IN House Wants Amazon to Collect Sales Tax Sooner

The Indiana House Monday voted 79-to-18 for a bill that would require Amazon.com to start collecting the state's seven-percent-sales-tax the first of July... six months sooner than a deal announced last year that would let the online retail giant put off collecting Indiana sales tax until 2014. Fatal House Fire in Michigan City

A 65-year-old Michigan City woman is dead after a house fire believed to have started from food left cooking on a stove. The Times reports investigators believe the woman fell asleep, then was awakened by a smoke detector, but was unable to escape. An investigation continues into a crash where three people were found dead after a vehicle was discovered Monday morning submerged in Cedar Creek, adjacent to Belshaw Road, south of Lowell. Michigan Company Moving to N Indiana

A wood furniture and custom molding manufacturer for the RV and commercial industries has announced plans to relocate its operations from Sturgis, Michigan, to northern Indiana, creating up to 34 new jobs in LaGrange by 2016. Jury selection began Monday in the Dustin McCowan murder trial. The Wheeler area man was charged with murder in the September 2011 death of one-time girlfriend 19-year-old Amanda Bach of Portage. Reports say a defense attorney tried to move the trial out of Porter County or have jurors chosen from another county, because of an article with pre-trial coverage in Sunday's Times, but the judge denied both requests Monday.
